| Description: |
In preparation for the upcoming Mutual Aid Test, several of our EmComm members got together to build portable, roll-up J-Pole antennas. Tuned for 2 meter work, they are made from lightweight, flexible wire and can be rolled up in a compact roll. This makes the antenna quite portable and ideal for any Go-Kit or radio box.
In addition to the roll-up J-Pole antennas we also cut a roll of RG8X into 25 ft. lengths. Dave KB3KAI, who organized the party, was given the job of installing 3-piece crimp BNC connectors and boots. While time consuming, the crimp-on connectors are very strong and should give many years of service.
Once the coax was prepared, each member was issued an antenna, two BNC barrel (female) connectors, a BNC (F) to PL259 (M) adapter, two 25 ft. lengths of coax, a roll of kite string and some fishing sinkers. A sinker is tied to the end of the kite string. The sinker is then tossed over a tree branch or suitable (non-metallic) supporting structure, carrying the string behind. With the string in position, the sinker is then untied and antenna attached to the string. The antenna is then hoisted up into vertical position and ready for service! Lengths of coax can be attached using the barrel connectors. The BNC end can be attached to a radio directly or by use of the PL259 adapter. |
